  Checkerboard Canyon

  Ten to fifteen rappels and about as many notable downclimbs, then a seven mile exit down the Zion Narrows to the Temple of Sinawava. The approach is long, exposed and off trail before any of that starts.

  A major tributary of the North Fork of the Virgin, the stream that becomes the Zion Narrows. Climb-Utah puts the whole route at 23 1/4 miles, most of it spent in the water.

  Under a mile of canyon and three short rappels, which makes it the usual first technical descent in Zion and a common pairing with Pine Creek in one day.

  Misery Canyon

  Most people know it as Fat Man's Misery. It drops into Parunuweap, which Road Trip Ryan compares to the Narrows for beauty and scale, far enough off the beaten path that you are unlikely to see anyone else.

  Parunuweap Canyon

  The East Fork of the Virgin River walked end to end, 18.5 miles of wading through the canyon Powell described swimming with his bundles of blankets and rations lashed to a raft.

  Pine Creek Canyon

  A short canyon by the numbers, 1.3 miles and seven rappels, finishing with a 100 foot drop into the chamber called the Grotto. Traffic noise from the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel carries most of the way down.

  Zion Narrows (Upper)

  Walked top down this is sixteen miles in the river and no rope. RopeWiki puts the canyon at 30 to 40 feet wide and rarely under 20, so the name promises more squeeze than it delivers.
