Parunuweap Canyon
The East Fork of the Virgin River walked end to end, 18.5 miles of wading through the canyon Powell described swimming with his bundles of blankets and rations lashed to a raft.
Two ways to do it. The full through trip needs a car shuttle of about 25 minutes and runs anywhere from 10 hours to three days. The Sneak-N-Peek from the lower end skips the shuttle, takes 7 to 8 hours, and still reaches the Powell Plaque, Labyrinth Falls, the mouth of Misery Canyon and the deepest section of the canyon. Climb-Utah's reasoning for no Zion backcountry permit is that the overnight portion falls outside the park boundary, which makes this a boundary question rather than a settled rule; confirm it before you rely on it. No rappels, but you wade for most of the day and swim in places, and a passenger car reaches the trailheads.
