This town sit on the side of the Usumacinta river and serves as a base to visit the area or to cross the border into Guatemala on the oposite side of the river. Here you can take a fast boat to visit Yaxchilan ruins (one hour away).
The ruins sit on a horseshoe bend of the Usumacinta that defends the site on every side but one narrow southern approach, a position that helped make Yaxchilan one of the most powerful Maya kingdoms of the Late Classic era and a longtime rival of Piedras Negras and Palenque. Carved stone lintels over the main doorways carry hieroglyphic texts recording the city's dynastic history, among the best preserved in the Maya world.
