Cueva de Oxtalja

verified ACA 3B Unknown flood risk Tamapatz, San Luis Potosi

Neat river cave located in a large dolina SW of the town of Tamapatz. The cave has some really nice flowstone and rimstone dam formations and is pretty mud-free except for the very end near the sump.

Five rappels in total, the longest 70 feet from a rock arch that starts as a slope and goes airborne partway down. Air temperature holds steady around 23 degrees Celsius (74 Fahrenheit) with crystal clear pools; a light wetsuit or waterproof jacket helps for the final push to the sump. The surrounding dolina is grazed pasture, so watch for cattle near the entrance, and it pairs well as a combo day with nearby Sotano de Cepillo.
