Chiflon Integral

High flood risk
Agua Blanca de Iturbide, Hidalgo
The granddaddy canyon of Hidalgo: roughly 26 rappels and miles of swift water through the Otomi Tepehua range, broken into named sections so smaller teams can do parts.
Approach is short (5 minutes from the road) but the descent is committing. The exit at the bottom comes out at a popular swimming hole and small cantina that serves fresh fish. Hub town Agua Blanca de Iturbide is the staging base for the regional canyons (Monroy, San Martin, Camino Real, Boca de Santo, Chifloncito). The Mexican canyoneering grade v5a4 IV captures the technical commitment more precisely than the ACA approximation; carry the rope and pull setup for 170 ft worst case.
Logistics
| Manager | Ejido and municipal land, Otomi Tepehua mountains. No federal protected area. |
|---|---|
| Permit | No permit required. No agency fee. Local landowner or community fee may apply at trailheads (varies). |
| Distance | 4.0 mi technical section |

| Time | 10-14 hr full integral; sections (Chifloncito, Medio Chiflon) can be done as standalone day trips |
| Technical | Ropewiki rates the full integral 3C IV R (v5a4 IV). About 26 rappels, longest near 120 ft, swift water throughout. Wired together as Chifloncito (lower), Medio Chiflon (middle, 21 rappels with max 170 ft on the half route), and the very bottom below the confluence. Technical rope retrievals, log obstacles, and traverse line rigging on the half route. Strong fit team required end to end. |
| Season | Best in the dry stretch Nov to May. Avoid summer monsoon Jun to Oct. |
| Flood risk | High. The watershed gathers fast and the canyon has swift water through most rappels. Cancel on any forecast precipitation in the upper Otomi Tepehua range. |
| Vehicle access | Passenger vehicle suitable to the parking and shuttle points; high clearance helpful for some access tracks |
| Crowd | Solitude on the integral. Lower swimming holes at the exit are a popular local recreation spot with a cantina. |
