Wadi Bani Khalid (Lower)
verified
ACA 2C
High flood risk
Bidiyah, OM
The wilder downstream half of Oman's most visited wadi: taller cliffs, swimming pools, and two optional abseils through a limestone gorge that ends near Bidiyah.
Do not confuse this with the upper tourist section (concrete walkways, bridges, restaurant). The lower descent is the real canyon experience. Submerged rock slabs are slippery; flash flood risk in the system is real. Modest dress on the approach and exit; swim attire OK in the water.
Logistics
| Manager | Open access on Sultanate of Oman lands |
|---|---|
| Permit | No permit required. The developed tourist pools at the upper entrance are free but heavily visited; the lower through-hike starts at a separate trailhead with no fee. |
| Distance | 5.0 mi |
| Elevation | ~459 ft loss |
| Time | 5 to 7 hr (4 hr descent) |
| Technical | Non-technical limestone gorge with mandatory swims and two waterfall sections bolted for optional abseils. ACA 2C III (v1a3 III per ropewiki). The lower (locally Wadi Hawer) is the wilder downstream half: taller walls, less infrastructure, and committing swim sections between pools. |
| Season | Oct to Apr |
| Flood risk | High. The Bani Khalid catchment fills fast during winter rains; the lower section has no exit between entry and the village exit point. Cancel on rain forecast for the Eastern Hajar. |
| Vehicle access | Paved road to the parking village (Bidiyah area) via Highway 23. Passenger car adequate. |
| Crowd | The upper tourist pools are crowded; the lower through-hike is solitude likely. |
