Canionul Vânătările Ponorului
verified
Ungraded
Unknown flood risk
Sub Piatră (Sălciua), Alba County
A short easy 80 meter karst descent in the Trascău Mountains, finishing down the 25 meter Cascada Dâlbina into one of Romania's few true poljies.
The shortest of the four routes Adventure Center guides in Romania at 2 to 2.5 hours, and the one it pitches as a first canyon. The site is better known for its shafts than its canyoning: Avenul din Țaul Morii nearby drops 106 meters and was explored in 1986 to 1988, and Avenul de la Vânătare drops 26 meters to a log choked lake. Neither is part of the canyoning line. The name comes from the purplish streaks rainwater has drawn down the eastern limestone wall. No ACA style grade has been published.
Logistics
| Manager | Vânătările Ponorului protected area, roughly 5 hectares, Alba County. |
|---|---|
| Permit | No canyoning permit system is published. Descents are sold as guided trips. |
| Elevation | ~262 ft loss |
| Time | 2-2.5 hr |
| Technical | Five cascades between 3 and 30 meters for about 80 meters of total drop, in the Trascău karst above Sub Piatră. The final vertical is Cascada Dâlbina, a 25 meter fall where Valea Poienii pours off a limestone lip. Below it the water runs into a poljie, a wide flat floored karst depression drained underground, a landform Romanian sources describe as unique in the country. Adventure Center rates the route easy. |
| Flood risk | Not rated by the operators. A small karst catchment feeding five drops inside 80 meters responds fast to rain, and the 30 meter vertical is the one that punishes a rising stream. The canyon opens into a poljie rather than a walled gorge, so the exit is not a trap, but the drops load up quickly. |
| Vehicle access | Road access to Sub Piatră off DC104. Adventure Center puts the walk from the car to the canyon entry at 700 meters, about 20 minutes. |
| Crowd | Vânătările Ponorului is a signed protected area with a viewpoint and draws hikers and cavers. The rope descent is guided and infrequent. |
| Coordinates | 46.3697, 23.4533 |
