Slickhorn Canyon
Slickhorn escaped the late 1800s pot hunting that stripped much of Grand Gulch, and the loop hike visits the well preserved structure known as the Slickhorn Perfect Kiva.
The trailhead is normally reachable by any vehicle in good weather and the route goes year round in good weather, with spring and fall the sensible windows. The ruins are unmarked and scattered from bare remnants to intact structures, so a detailed map and a route description do most of the work. Slickhorn is one of the canyons named in the BLM system where overnight travel requires a reserved backpacking permit, 15 dollars per person per trip and 20 people per trailhead per day; day hiking runs on the 5 dollar per person day pass instead. Carry water, this is a dry mesa approach.
