Sleeping God Canyon
verified
Ungraded
Unknown flood risk
Thames
The headline technical canyon of the Coromandel, a steep schist slot with nine waterfall raps to 45 m and an unforgiving high-flow default.
Also called Atuatumoe Stream. Not a starter canyon, every credible source says so. Full wetsuit standard, plus 100 m total rope (typically 3 by 50 m). Anchors are maintained by Canyonz and reported in good order. Didymo present in many North Island catchments, follow Check Clean Dry between systems. Sandflies less of an issue here than on South Island West Coast, but still bring repellent.

| Manager | DOC Coromandel Forest Park, Kauaeranga Valley |
|---|---|
| Permit | No permit required. Commercial operator CANYONZ holds the local concession and requests a courtesy phone call (0800 422 696) before descents so they can coordinate rescue cover and water-level info. |
| Time | 4.5 to 6.5 hr (45 min approach, 3 to 5 hr descent, 30 to 45 min exit) |
| Technical | Nine pitches, longest 45 m, so 3 by 50 m ropes is the standard rig. Big aquatic descent in Kauaeranga Valley schist with technical waterfall raps, swims, and high default flow. Native grade v4a3III per kiwicanyons (ACA-equivalent 4C2 / v4a5 III per ropewiki). Requires releasable rigging, biner blocks, and depth-checking before any jumps. Considered the headline tech canyon of the North Island. |
| Season | Dec to Apr is the standard window. Trip reports cluster in Feb and Mar at more manageable flows; winter descents happen but the water gets brutally cold and pushy. |
| Flood risk | Severe. The Kauaeranga catchment spikes fast from Coromandel storms and the canyon is largely inescapable once committed. At least one fatality on record, multiple rescues for stranded or overdue parties. Smith Cableway gauge is the standard check before going in. Cancel on any rain forecast for the upper Kauaeranga. |
| Vehicle access | 2WD car to the road end carpark up Kauaeranga Valley Road from Thames. |
| Crowd | Moderate. Daily commercial trips with CANYONZ in season, plus a steady trickle of private parties on summer weekends. |
