Mordor Canyon

ACA 4C1 III R
Extreme flood risk
Bajos del Toro, Alajuela
Long technical volcanic canyon out of the Poas drainage, 14 rappels in sky blue acidic water, the deep-cluster headliner above Bajos del Toro.
Highest-rated technical descent in Costa Rica on the ropewiki community vote (5.0 on 36 ratings). Acidity issue is real and not a rumor: bring pH paper. Park boundary clipping is also real, ranger citations have happened. The integral variant (Dos Torres / Mordor Integral) chains this descent with the Dos Torres canyon above and runs 18 rappels over 8 to 14 hours.
Logistics
| Manager | Private property (Dino-Land entry fee) plus a Parque Nacional Volcán Poás (SINAC) buffer that is technically closed to entry |
|---|---|
| Permit | Access restricted. Pay the Dino-Land entry fee at the trailhead. The descent route clips into Parque Nacional Volcán Poás and rangers cite trespassers, so the practical access depends on guide relationships (Toros Canyoning Group). Solo descents are not the cultural norm here. |
| Distance | 3.4 |
| Elevation | ~2000 ft gain on approach, ~1000 ft loss on descent |
| Time | 6-8 hr (1.5-2.5 hr approach, 3-5 hr descent, 1 hr exit) |
| Technical | Volcanic water canyon descending toward the Poas crater drainage. Ropewiki rates 4C1 III R (v3a3 V). 14 rappels, longest about 131 ft. The water runs sky blue from dissolved sulfuric acid washed off the Poas lake (recorded pH near zero in the crater), which can sting eyes and degrade ropes; pH test the flow before committing. Multiple jumps and slides through the descent. |
| Season | Jan-Mar dry season only |
| Flood risk | Extreme. Volcanic catchment with a perched acid lake upstream. Flash flood and lahar potential. Only descend with a perfect weather forecast and an early start. |
| Vehicle access | Passenger car |
| Crowd | Low, but high regard (5.0 on 36 ratings, the most lauded Bajos del Toro descent) |
| Coordinates | 10.2002, -84.2514 |
