Montezuma Falls

verified ACA 2C1 I Low flood risk Montezuma, Puntarenas

Three falls above Montezuma that can be jumped, rappelled on a retrievable anchor, or bypassed entirely, run as a loop off a popular tourist trail.

The most forgiving technical option in the Costa Rica set and the one that works with a mixed ability group, because anyone can opt out of any obstacle and rejoin on the trail. Two small logistics wins: park across from the main trailhead to skip the parking fee, and exit at the point where you paid for access, then take the short steep road back down to the car rather than reversing the creek. Retrievable anchors mean no fixed hardware to rely on, so bring your own rigging.

Logistics

ManagerPrivate land, with paid access to the upper falls
PermitRopewiki lists permits as not required. Access is the wrinkle rather than permission: parking across the street from the main trailhead avoids the parking fee, and reaching the top falls costs under five US dollars, paid at the staircase down canyon right below the lower falls. That is a private access charge, not a government or park fee.
Time~2 hr (1 hr approach, 1 hr descent)
TechnicalRopewiki rates 2C1 I (a4, commitment I). Zero to three jumps or rappels depending on how you take it, longest drop 80 ft. Creek hiking up to the lower falls, then three falls, each of which can be jumped, rappelled off a retrievable anchor, or bypassed easily. The whole loop can be done as a non technical hike on the popular trail outside the watercourse. The source's own summary is that it amounts to one stunt rappel with two short jumps before it.

Flood riskNot published by the source. Every obstacle has a documented bypass on a popular trail outside the watercourse, which is the practical mitigation here and the reason this reads as low consequence.
CrowdHigh by Costa Rica canyoning standards. This is a mainstream Montezuma tourist waterfall with a paid staircase, a main trailhead and a popular trail, not a backcountry descent.
