verified ACA 2C1 II R High flood risk Cinchona, Alajuela

Sandstone descent on Ruta 126 near Catarata de La Paz, five rappels topping out at 85 m, reached across a private finca that charges its own entry.

The documented route stops where the tourist section ends, after the fourth rappel. The page author states the lower half of the same canyon is still to be done and the description will be updated, so treat anything below the fourth rappel as unrecorded. The first rappel can be skipped by entering from below the fall, at the cost of missing the nicest drop, using a 3 m downclimb on the right.

Logistics

ManagerPrivate property (Cinchona Waterfall Trails finca)
PermitNo government permit. Access is across the private Cinchona Waterfall Trails finca and the owner, don Allan, has to be asked in advance. He charges 5,000 colones per person, which is a landowner access fee for the farm and the use of its facilities, not a government or park fee. Ropewiki flags the canyon as requiring permits, and that is what the requirement amounts to.

TechnicalSandstone canyon on Ruta 126 below Catarata de La Paz. Ropewiki rates 2C1 II R (v4 a4 IV). 5 rappels plus 3 downclimbs, longest 85 m. R3 sits on very slippery rock and the rope runs over a projecting edge with heavy rub. Below it a small box section is protected by a controlled descent off an abalakov threaded in the rock on the upper left. The fourth rappel is reached by activating a handline traverse from a small tree rooted in the rock out to the ridge edge, where a rock holds the traverse anchor and a larger rock just above it carries the rappel anchor on its back side. A 15 min shuttle is required.

Flood riskNot published by the source, and the source contradicts itself on flow: an ACA water rating of C1 (low) against a European aquatic rating of a4 (high). Treat the flow as unresolved and scout it rather than trusting either number.
Vehicle accessPassenger car
CrowdThe upper four rappels run as a tourist route off the Cinchona Waterfall Trails property, which has bathrooms, showers, secure parking and a soda 50 m away, so expect company on the developed section.
