Meije (Lower)

verified Ungraded Unknown flood risk La Grave, Hautes-Alpes

The lower Meije follows the Torrent de l'Abéous below La Grave, its opening falls approachable even though the very first chute is missing a solid anchor point.

Real difficulty starts at a submerged, cave like pool partway down. Parties struggling on the opening chute are better off turning back there than pushing on, and in low flow the pool can be passed directly. The canyon has also been closed twice for hydroelectric penstock work below the Chal Vachere intake, so confirm current status even though no order is active as of this writing.

PermitNo standing permit or fee. The commune of La Grave has twice ordered temporary closures of this canyon for hydroelectric penstock construction work below the Chal Vachere water intake: an arrete of 14 May 2024 (254 days, ending 24 Jan 2025) and a further arrete of 7 May 2025 running through 31 Dec 2025. Both are listed obsolete (past their stated end date) on Descente Canyon's tracker with no newer order recorded, so no closure currently appears in force, but the project has closed the canyon repeatedly and could again.
