AtlasDaisetsuzan NP - Hokkaido

Kuwaunnai-gawa

verified Ungraded Extreme flood risk Higashikawa, Hokkaido

Hokkaido's most famous sawanobori line: a kilometer and a half of unbroken water-glazed slab through Daisetsuzan to the Tomuraushi summit.

This is shower-climbing (sawanobori) not Western downward canyoning, so the morphology is the same narrow water-cut bedrock but the direction of travel is upstream and the trip exits over a 2,141 m volcanic summit. Strict permit window Jul 1 to Sep 15, both the forest entry permit and the police mountain plan must be filed ten days ahead. The forestry office's own page calls it dangerous with no escape routes. Most parties hire a JMGA-certified sawanobori guide; Guide Office Pika and several Hokkaido alpine clubs run it overnight. Listed as one of the Hyaku-mei-tani (100 famous valleys) of Japan.
