TechnicalSawanobori up the Kurio-gawa on the southwest coast of Yakushima, ascending clear granite-bedrock pools to a terminal waterfall reached by no other trail. Subtropical canyon environment, warm water year round, distinct from the snowmelt-fed Honshu and Hokkaido lines. Run as a half-day shower-climb in swim shoes and helmet, not rappel-heavy. The guide may swap to an alternate Yakushima river on high water days.
SeasonYear round in principle; rainy season Jun has very high flow. Most-trafficked spring through autumn.
Flood riskHigh. Yakushima is one of the wettest places in Japan (over 4 m annual rainfall on the coast, far more in the interior); rivers spike fast on tropical rain.
Vehicle access2WD paved to Kurio village via the island ring road. Access from Kagoshima by ferry or short flight to Yakushima Airport then 90 min west.
CrowdLight to moderate. The Yakushima outdoor scene leans heavily toward Jomon Sugi day hikes; sawanobori bookings are a smaller niche.
