Pego, Alicante
A polished limestone gorge in the Vall de Laguar reputed among Spanish canyoneers as one of the best dry descents in the country, though a catastrophic 2007 flood reshaped much of its lower narrows.
The gorge below the eight meter rappel has no escape in either direction, so check the entire Rio Girona watershed forecast before dropping in: a group was trapped there by a flash flood in December 2004 and needed a technical rescue. Torrential rain on October 12, 2007 buried potholes under new gravel, tore out bolted anchors, and permanently reshaped the lower canyon. The route is fully bolted with chemical anchors and handlines past the deep potholes, and wetsuits are not needed outside of high water.
