Estero Las Cucas

verified Ungraded Moderate flood risk San Jose de Maipo, Region Metropolitana

The most-run canyoning descent in Cajon del Maipo, a Quebrada del Melocoton tributary with 4 to 5 rappels topping out at 15 m through shallow pools just an hour from Santiago.

Sometimes called Las Cucas or Pozas Azules by operators. Distinct from the rafting and rappelling at Cascada de Las Animas a few kilometres further up the valley, which is a different (commercial-only) product. The Cajon del Maipo region also offers higher-commitment descents (Quebrada Las Carmenes, others) but those are less consistently documented in English-language sources.

TechnicalDescenso de canon (Spanish term for canyoneering, also called barranquismo in CL). Approach is a 40 to 60 minute hike from the El Melocoton sector, about 8 km from the San Jose plaza toward the mountains. The descent involves 4 to 5 rappels through waterfalls up to 15 m tall; published beta also mentions 3 main cascade rappels with the tallest at 15 m. Pools are shallow (operators note no deep pools and no swimming ability required), so this is a dry-to-light-water descent by Chilean standards.
