Egypt 5 Canyon

verified Ungraded Unknown flood risk Escalante, UT

Two separate slots split by 1.2 miles of open sandy wash. The upper one starts with a 30 foot downclimb straight into a nearly 300 foot rappel that you stem over to reach.

The two halves are not equal, and the upper section is the reason to come. Past the big rappel there is a 20 foot upclimb of a flared crack, then sustained stemming around 40 feet off the deck and several silo crossings, which is what an R rated canyon feels like in practice. Lower Egypt 5 is thinner: an 800 foot slot with stemming in the 20 to 30 foot range and a few silos, one wide enough that many parties will need a meat anchor to get down and can then simply walk out. After that a short open stretch ends in a 70 foot rappel, then half a mile of non technical canyon and a 2.5 mile exit hike with no shade at all. Carry water for the exit, not just for the canyon.
