Three things define the day, per the only beta RopeWiki carries: medium height stemming, a sketchy partner capture, and a final rappel worth the walk in. An optional X silo crossing and an X downclimb are available and can be declined without ending the descent, which makes this a reasonable step up for a party with R miles and no X miles. Seven miles of ground and a 3B III R rating means a full day. Bring a partner you would trust to catch you, because the capture is not optional. There is no approach, descent or exit description on the page, so plan on route finding from the map.

| Permit | Monument wide rule, not a canyon specific finding. BLM requires a free permit for all overnight stays anywhere in Grand Staircase-Escalante, self issued at developed trailheads or at the Escalante, Cannonville, Kanab and Big Water visitor centers. Day use by a private party requires no permit: BLM issues Special Recreation Permits for commercial use, competitive events, organized groups and recreation events, none of which covers a private party descending a canyon. The lottery permits BLM lists alongside the monument, Coyote Buttes North and Paria Canyon, are Vermilion Cliffs units administered from Kanab and do not apply here. |
