Dos Torres Canyon (Mordor Integral)

ACA 4C1 III R
Extreme flood risk
Bajos del Toro, Alajuela
Integral linkup of Dos Torres into Mordor, 18 rappels and 8 to 14 hours, the longest committed descent in the Bajos del Toro cluster.
This is the maximum commitment route in Costa Rica. Acid water (Poas crater drainage has measured pH near zero) damages ropes; anchor corrosion is also documented. Lahar risk is real, the volcano is active. Treat this as an expedition-grade outing with phoned-ahead landowner permission and ironclad weather.
Logistics
| Manager | Private landowner Omar (+506 8367-5492); descent clips Parque Nacional Volcán Poás (SINAC) where entry is closed |
|---|---|
| Permit | Access restricted. Requires landowner permission from Omar (+506 8367-5492). The route enters the strictly closed Poas national park zone, ranger patrols cite trespassers. Practically a guided-only descent. |
| Distance | 8.4 |
| Elevation | ~2887 ft gain on approach, ~1804 ft loss on descent, ~1082 ft gain on exit |
| Time | 8-14 hr (full day commitment) |
| Technical | The integral linkup. Dos Torres canyon above flows into Mordor canyon, 18 rappels total (8 on Dos Torres plus 10 on Mordor), longest about 200 ft. Most subsequent drops 20 to 100 ft. Acidic Poas drainage water; pH testing recommended because acid corrosion of ropes is documented. Swift water hazard. |
| Season | Jan-Apr |
| Flood risk | Extreme. Volcanic flash flood and lahar potential, plus acid exposure and respiratory irritation from volcanic gases. The 8 to 14 hr exposure window magnifies the weather risk. |
| Vehicle access | Passenger car |
| Crowd | Very low (5.0 on 1 rating, niche even by Bajos del Toro standards) |
