Defiance House
An Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwelling in Forgotten Canyon, roughly twelve miles up the lake from Bullfrog or Halls Crossing, named for a pictograph panel of three warriors carrying clubs and shields. The site was occupied from about 1250 to 1285 AD by what was likely one or two extended families, fifteen to twenty people.
Boat access only, and lake level decides how much of the day is walking. Above roughly 3,650 feet of lake elevation you can motor to the base of the ruin; below that, expect up to two miles each way on foot. From Halls Crossing it is the third canyon on the right heading upstream, at channel marker 106. Three quarters of a mile in, a small granary sits in the right fork; take the left fork a quarter mile to the next junction, then the right fork for a mile and a half. University of Utah archaeologists located the site in 1959 and the standing walls are the reason to come, so keep hands and packs off them and leave anything on the ground where it lies. An hour on site is about right when the water is high enough to tie up close.
