AtlasRomania - Rodna Mountains

Canionul Cascada Cailor

verified Ungraded Low flood risk Borșa, Maramureș County

Romania's tallest waterfall, about 90 meters, descended on rope as the centrepiece of a ten pitch line dropping 250 meters through the Rodna Mountains.

The 50 meter pitch is split by a regrouping ledge rather than run in one push. Using the ski chairlift cuts the walk in to roughly 25 minutes, which is why operators budget the whole day at 6 to 6.5 hours despite the short approach. The waterfall sits in the Piatra Rea reserve inside Munții Rodnei National Park, the largest protected area in the Eastern Carpathians at 47,227 hectares, 3,300 of which were declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1979. No ACA style grade has been published for the descent.

TechnicalTen vertical passages between 10 and 50 meters, roughly 250 meters of total descent, on the Valea Cailor stream in the Rodna massif. The headline drop is Cascada Cailor itself, about 90 meters and the tallest waterfall in Romania, broken by a regrouping stance partway down. Adventure Center rates the route medium, the hardest of the four canyons it guides in the country. Full neoprene, harness and rappel kit are standard issue.
Flood riskNot rated by the operators. The line descends an active stream draining a glacial cirque at around 1300 meters in the Rodna massif, so flow tracks snowmelt and storms rather than sitting steady. Fifty meter pitches under moving water leave no margin if the stream comes up mid descent.
Vehicle accessPaved road to the Borșa ski complex. Approach is either the Borșa chairlift, about 25 minutes, or 2.5 kilometers on foot, about 1 hour.
CrowdThe waterfall is a busy chairlift served tourist stop. The rope descent is another matter and is sold by only a handful of Romanian operators.
