Atlas › Bulgaria - Stara Planina, Iskar Gorge
Bov Waterfalls (Iskar Gorge)
Five rappellable waterfalls in the Iskar Gorge an hour north of Sofia, topped by the roughly 45 meter Pod Kamiko drop.
The difficulty is explicitly tunable: the club sets how much of the sequence a group runs, offering a full day over all five drops or a half day over part of them. That plus the stated no special skills required framing means this is guided beginner terrain rather than an independent objective, despite the 45 meter pitch. Note that most Bulgarian features marketed as canyons are hiking or eco trail routes; a survey of ten Bulgarian canyons found only this one, the Vlahi river, and the Enin river canyon near Kazanlak with any rope descent content at all. No coordinate could be verified: an OpenStreetMap query for waterfall features around Bov was rate limited before returning, and no named drop resolved in Nominatim. Bov at 43.0222823, 23.3540450 is the access anchor. No ACA style grade has been published.
Logistics
| Permit | No permit system is published. Club Edelweiss runs the descent with a minimum of two instructors per small group. |
|---|---|
| Time | Full day for all five drops; a half day option covers part of the sequence. |
| Technical | Five water drops in the Bov section of the Iskar Gorge that Club Edelweiss describes as suitable for alpine rope descent. The tallest is Pod Kamiko at roughly 45 meters; the rest are shorter. Rappels are rigged and belayed by the instructors, and the club runs practice rappels from lower heights first so participants get used to the alpine gear. Alpine harness, rope, helmet and safety devices plus neoprene are provided. The club states the route needs no special skills or physical preparation. |
| Season | Spring through autumn, weather dependent, per Club Edelweiss. |
| Flood risk | Not published by the club. These are drops on Stara Planina tributaries feeding the Iskar an hour north of Sofia, and a 45 meter rappel on a live waterfall is unforgiving of a stream that comes up. The club gates the day on weather, which is the only stated control. |
| Vehicle access | Bov sits in the Iskar Gorge about an hour north of Sofia, reached by road and served by the Sofia to Mezdra rail line through the gorge. |
| Crowd | Run as a guided club activity in small groups rather than a high volume commercial product. The Iskar Gorge itself is a busy weekend destination out of Sofia. |
