The highest rated descent in Heraklion: a 75 meter waterfall followed by a genuinely dark section where headlamps stop being optional.

Reach Arvi either via Kastri or from the Viannos to Ierapetra road at the hamlet of Amiras. Lower parking: from the seafront take the central street uphill 450 m to where the road cuts the stream, turn left onto the main piste just before it, then right twice, following the stream to a small clearing. Upper parking: leave Arvi west to the Kastri road junction, climb 6.3 km toward Heraklion to a fork with a small chapel beside two large trees, then take the right hand piste. Limestone.

TechnicalACA 4B II R (v5a2 II). Minimum 80 m rope in single; the big waterfall is 75 m. The canyon tightens hard after a good 27 m drop and the passages take on character, then the gorge opens just before that 75 m. In high flow use the river right deviation to reach a far offset anchor, because descending in the water column there can be very dangerous. A river right anchor was added at minus 40 m in December 2006, but an 80 m rope remains the better call. Friction is light. A dark section begins at the foot of the big waterfall and headlamps are needed through it. A 20 m and a 6 m at a distinctive window finish the descent.
SeasonWinter to spring. After a wet winter there is a lot of water in spring.
Flood riskHigh. Descente-canyon calls the escape unreliable and says the 75 m waterfall is dangerous in high flow, where the water column line must be abandoned for the offset river right anchor. The upper canyon runs harder than the lower. Cancel on rain over the Omalos plateau.
Vehicle accessTwo cars, 10.2 km shuttle, both parkings reached by piste. Descente-canyon notes the shuttle is not strictly obligatory. The upper piste is 1.3 km with room for about three cars.
