Angels Landing
Not a canyon at all, but a 5.4 mile round trip that gains 1,488 feet and finishes along a knife edge ridge where a single metal chain is the only handhold.
The permit covers the chains, not the walk. Scout Lookout needs no permit and takes most of the distance and elevation gain, which makes it the natural turnaround for anyone uneasy with heights. NPS is blunt about the rest: since 1930 the majority of deadly accidents on this hike have happened on the chain section, and most of them in wet conditions when the rock turns slick. Do not start up if storm clouds are around, if the ground is wet or icy, or if you will finish in the dark. Most hikers take about four hours. Summer heat on the exposed switchbacks is the other common reason parties bail.
